Teachers' pay offer 2025/26

NEU members accept offer - 88.56% of members who voted, said Yes to the offer, and 11.44% said No. 

As previously advised, it is expected that your pay increase, including back pay up to 1 September 2025, will be included in your February salary. Read more about the pay offer.

Independent panel review of workload recommendations

This letter is intended to provide an update to teachers and school leaders regarding the recommendations from the Independent Review Panel on Workload and sets out recent discussions at the Teachers Negotiating Committee.  You will be aware that the Minister’s formal response to the Independent Review along with a framework for implementation to deliver meaningful and sustainable change is due to be published by DE in April.  NEU will review the framework when received and update you accordingly.

Strengthening Inspection Legislation: NEU response

The Education Minister launched a public consultation on proposals to strengthen inspection legislation for all schools, which closed on 10 July 2025. This notification is not unforeseen, as Paul Givan has spoken publicly in the Assembly about his desire to strengthen Northern Ireland’s inspection legislation. We are, however, frustrated by the timing of this consultation, as we have recently closed pay talks and shifted our focus to workload and the recommendations of the nine reviews.

Advice and guidance

Agreement on teachers' pay and conditions of service is reached through the Teachers' Salaries and Conditions of Service Committee (Schools) which comprises the employing authorities/employer representatives, the Department of Education (DE) and the five recognised teachers' unions NEU is one of the five unions that make up the Northern Ireland Teachers Council (NITC).

Training courses 

Our training courses are based on trade union principles and emphasise the NEU’s policies and achievements.  Some of our courses are held jointly with other unions - INTO and UTU.  Each course is designed to meet the needs of all attendees and provide the opportunity to work collaboratively with colleagues to solve common problems in a supportive environment. 

Please apply for the courses early and inform your employer. It is crucial that, as representatives, you exercise your legal right to reasonable time off for trade union duties and training. This applies to both seasoned and new reps. 

Who can attend? 

Courses are open to NEU members. Some of the courses are aimed at particular groups. The course information indicates which membership group each course is aimed at, although this is not exclusive and other members may benefit from attendance and you are most welcome.
