Early years: Girls can't climb trees!

This session explores young children's play and gender stereotypes in the early years. 

Have you ever noticed children playing in gendered ways, or heard children using gender as a reason for not playing with someone? This session will explore how children use stereotypes in their play and how we can avoid gender bias in our provision. 

Learning outcomes

  • Understand terms gender, gender stereotype and gender equity;
  • Reaffirm play as high quality pedagogy for young children, including the reception year;
  • Consider the how children may use stereotypes in their play and recognise the implications of this for our practice;
  • Reflect on our own understanding of gender and recognise when stereotypes can lead to prejudice and how to avoid gender bias in our provision
