Commenting on A New Direction for Students in an AI World, a report from the Center for Universal Education at Brookings Institute (1), Daniel Kebede, general secretary of the National Education Union, said:
“We welcome today’s in-depth and timely report detailing the current benefits and risks of AI in children’s education. Currently the risks of AI use in education overshadow the benefits and it is clear from this report that action is urgently needed to shape and leverage AI for transformational educational benefits.
“We all have a role to play in ensuring that we can ‘bend the arc' of AI implementation towards educational experiences that help all children to flourish academically, socially and civically.
“For the NEU, this means ensuring that educators, and their respective unions remain at the heart of shaping AI adoption and use in their settings and at national level. As with the authors of this report, we call for educational AI tools to be co-created with educators, students, parents, and communities in order to ensure that children can ‘prosper’. Education needs a roadmap for how we turn the tide and ensure the risks of AI no longer overshadow the benefits.”
